There are 2 types of new moms, in my opinion. 1: Those who say "Why doesn't anyone talk about this stuff?!" Meaning, they want the nitty-gritty, gory details about everything right from the start. 2: Those who essentially plug their ears and go "nah-nah-nah-nah!" every time someone tries to tell them something unpleasant about motherhood. "Maybe that was YOUR experience," they think. "But things will be totally different for ME."
Guess which one I was? That's right, the stubborn second one. But in an effort to appease everyone, I attempted to write an honest yet encouraging post about whether or not the statement, "It gets easier" is actually true. What do you guys think?

Sweet! Check you out! I'm on my way to read!
I think I am mom number 1 & 2. I ask alot of moms about the difficulties they had faced with thier children, wanting to know their experience. But if they are too negative or depresseive, I'll just convince myself my experience will be better. :)))
Your article definitely reassured me though, very well written!
I can never figure out how to comment on the Bump. Maybe I'm just stupid.
My take is more like your last point: motherhood is like any other long-term commitment. Basically you just get used to it, till it no longer seems like such a big deal, no longer worthy of such deep analysis. At least, until somebody asks. :) Then it depends on what kind of day you're having. If the kids are good, it's definitely easier! If they're bad...well, you get the idea. ;)
Kathleen, you have to be registered and signed in to comment on The Bump, I believe. But thanks for your comment(s) here! Always insightful. :)
My DH and I just made this fateful remark the other day re: our 5 month old, which probably means he'll go and change the game again. Or start teething (we live in fear of teething).
Anyway, I like your blog. I don't know blog etiquette though. Is there a hazing ritual? Should I make an introduction?
Cute. You know the kind of mom I am - the one kicking and screaming because motherhood IS so hard and no one ever warned me. I even wrote a book with the same title, It Gets Easier! and Other LIES We Tell New Mothers!
A wise mother once told me: It's doesn't get easier, you just get used to it - kind of like what you are saying - right?
Herrmann, nope no hazing. Just read, enjoy, and comment at will. Thanks for stopping by!
Claudine, yes, you did write the book on this subject, didn't you! Readers, check out my mini-review of "It Gets Easier..." in this post: http://www.diaryofanewmom.net/2009/12/in-all-honesty.html
I enjoyed the post over at The Bump! I was one of those moms who was like, "Why didn't anybody tell me?" But the truth was, I was in ignorant bliss and I didn't want to know. I don't warn other moms-to-be for the exact same reasons. They are too busy sniffing baby powder to hear the truth. I'm not going to be one who spoils all that fun. They'll find out soon enough. :)
